Large difference
Listen for a large difference and supporting data.

Describe large and small differences, use data accurately and recommend one option.
For learners: Describe large and small differences with four comparative modifiers, use data accurately, and recommend one option.
For teachers: This B1 step transfers accurate factual reporting into data-based comparison. Learners calibrate difference strength with four modifiers, verify claims against three criteria, answer an evidence challenge, and recommend one option.
By the end of this lesson, you can describe large and small differences with four comparative modifiers, use data accurately, and recommend one option.
บอกความแตกต่างมากและน้อยด้วย comparative modifiers 4 ตัว ใช้ตัวเลขอย่างถูกต้อง และแนะนำตัวเลือก 1 อย่างโดยมีหลักฐานรองรับ
Words such as much, far, slightly and a little tell the listener how important a difference may be. The modifier must match the data, direction and decision context or the recommendation can become misleading.
Verify baseline, direction and unit before scoring modifier choice. The final recommendation must follow stated data and priority.
| Stage | Teacher move | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Data | Check baseline, unit and direction. | Eight comparisons |
| 2 · Form | Build four modifier patterns. | Twelve choices |
| 3 · Evidence | Repair exaggerated or unclear claims. | Eight audits |
| 4 · Listen | Recover claim, data and decision. | Two maps |
| 5 · Plan | Compare three criteria. | Option map |
| 6 · Perform | Score MEAN/FORM/USE and retry. | Recommendation + retry |
Identify baseline, unit and size of difference so the comparison stays true.
| Data pair | Difference | Safe first statement |
|---|---|---|
| ฿8,000 vs ฿12,000 | ฿4,000 / about 33% lower than 12,000 | Option A is cheaper than B. |
| 42 min vs 45 min | 3 minutes | Option A is slightly faster. |
| 78% vs 81% | 3 percentage points | B has a slightly higher success rate. |
| 9 defects vs 3 defects | 6 fewer / one-third as many | The new process has far fewer defects. |
Do not accept a modifier before the learner verifies direction, unit and baseline. Context can change whether a numerical difference is practically large or small.
Place much, far, slightly and a little before the comparative form.
| Difference size | Modifier + comparative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| large | much + comparative | The annual plan is much cheaper. |
| large / emphatic | far + comparative | The train is far more reliable. |
| small / neutral | slightly + comparative | Option B is slightly faster. |
| small / conversational | a little + comparative | The room is a little quieter. |
Teach one modifier + one comparative form. Contrast “much cheaper” with “much more reliable”; avoid double comparative forms.
Use the data to justify the size word and prevent an exaggerated recommendation.
| Evidence risk | Unsafe claim | Precise repair |
|---|---|---|
| small gap exaggerated | A is far faster: 45 vs 43 minutes. | A is slightly faster by two minutes. |
| direction reversed | Costs are lower: ฿15k vs ฿12k. | Costs are ฿3,000 higher. |
| percent vs points | rose by 5%: 70% to 75% | rose by 5 percentage points |
| criterion hidden | B is much better. | B is far more reliable, with 98% uptime. |
A precise comparison identifies the criterion, keeps the direction correct and makes the strength proportionate to the data and decision context.
Score truth before fluency. Ask “compared with what?”, “in which unit?” and “how large is the practical difference?” whenever a claim sounds stronger than the evidence.
Recover the modifier, comparison criterion and recommendation logic.
Listen for a large difference and supporting data.
Listen for a small difference, priority and recommendation.
| Pass | Record | Question |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Claim | option + criterion + modifier | What is being compared? |
| 2 · Data | number + unit + baseline | Does the evidence support it? |
| 3 · Decision | priority + recommendation | Why does this difference matter? |
The clips are short retrieval models in two accents. Replay as needed, but require criterion and data—not only the modifier—before accepting the recommendation.
Compare two options across three criteria and rank the difference that matters most.
| Planning move | Required note | Language choice |
|---|---|---|
| option and purpose | what decision is needed | We need to choose… |
| three criteria | cost, time, quality or risk | A is much/slightly… than B |
| supporting data | number and unit | by… / at… compared with… |
| priority | most decision-relevant difference | The main advantage is… |
| recommendation | option + limitation + reason | I recommend… although… |
Require comparable units and a clear decision purpose. A recommendation should follow the learner’s stated priority, not simply the option with the most advantages.
Present a balanced comparison, defend the evidence and improve one over- or under-stated claim.
Result: 0–2 Rebuild · 3–4 Developing · 5–6 B1 performance evidence.
Score the first independent comparison. Give one target only, then record whether the retry improves data meaning, comparative form or decision usefulness.
You can now describe large and small differences with four modifiers, support comparisons with accurate data and recommend one balanced option. Continue through the Dynamic Learning Graph below.
